The Greene County softball team had a rough 1-4 week. They lost to Heart of Iowa conference rivals Prairie City-Monroe and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter and won one of three games at the West Marshall Rose Festival tournament in State Center Saturday.
Greene County hosted Class 4A, number one ranked Adel-DeSoto-Minburn in Jefferson on Tuesday night, June 14. The Rams had taken a 1-0 lead on a single by Samantha Hardaway to begin the third frame. Carleigh Paup hit a two-out soft single to center field to drive in Hardaway for the lead and Paup advanced to third on a throwing error. However, rain and lightning moved in so the contest was cancelled and won’t be made up.
PCM 6 ~ GC 5
Greene County lost a close softball game to Prairie City-Monroe Monday, June 13. Down 5-3 after five innings, the Rams put three runs on the board in the sixth for a 6-5 advantage but couldn’t hold PCM as they gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth to fall behind 7-6. GC could not get the runs they needed in the final inning, giving the Mustangs the victory.
Hannah Promes suffered the loss on the mound. PCM gathered seven runs on 12 hits as Promes walked two batters and struck out one.
Greene County hit the ball well enough, stroking two home runs and a double, but couldn’t get runners in scoring position. Sydney Koch drove in two runs on a home run while Laurin Lyons was the lone runner on her homer. Promes rapped a double and a single for an RBI. Paup and Megan Carey each stroked two singles.
CMB 2 ~ GC 1
Friday, June 17, Greene County squared off against Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in Collins. CMB scored a run in the first inning while the Rams evened the score in the second. The Raiders added what would be the winning run in the fourth and GC could not respond, giving CMB the 2-1 victory.
Promes was the losing pitcher. She gave up two runs, one earned on a CMB home run in the first inning, on three hits while walking two and fanning two.
The only run for the Rams came on Jenna Beyers solo home run. Megan Durbin stroked a double while Carey and Koch hit two singles apiece. Paup added a base hit.
WEST MARSHALL ROSE FESTIVAL TOURNAMENT, State Center
Saturday the Rams traveled to State Center for an all-day tournament and placed fourth.
Their first opponent was Gladbrook-Reinbeck who fell 9-2 in six innings due to a time limit. The host team West Marshall defeated the Rams in the semi-finals 8-4. Greene County fell in the consolation game to CR Prairie.
GC 9 ~ G-R 2
The Rams took the lead over Gladbrook-Reinbeck in the first inning and were up 5-1 at the end of three. GC added four runs in the next two innings to G-R’s one for the final 9-2 tally.
Promes returned to the win column, pitching all six innings. She allowed four hits for two runs, neither of which was earned. She walked two batters and fanned five.
Promes aided her pitching effort with three RBIs on a double and single. Paup added a double, single and RBI. Additional hits came from Izzy Bravard, double and single; Hardaway, single; Beyers, single; Koch, RBI single; and Carey, two bunt base hits. Megan Durbin drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
WM 8 ~ GC 4
In the semifinals, the Rams lost to West Marshall 8-4. Hardaway was the losing pitcher. She went the first 2-2/3 innings, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out two. All eight runs were off Hardaway, but all were unearned. Beyers pitched the final 2-1/3 and gave up no runs on one hit and three walks. She had three strikeouts. Both teams were charged with three errors.
The Rams had six hits with Paup collecting a single and double and two RBIs. Faith Davis stroked a double, driving in one run. Carey, Promes, and Hardaway also singled.
CR PRAIRIE 4 ~ GC 0
In the third place game, the Rams were pitted against Class 5A Cedar Rapids Prairie, losing 4-0 to finish fourth. The Rams had just two hits, one of those being a double by Tieryn Tucker. Koch singled for the only other hit.
Promes went the distance, giving up four unearned runs on three hits and no walks while striking three batters out. The Rams had five errors.
